This rubric will assess students on the skills needed to spike a volleyball.

Student shows understanding of the skill and can demonstrate part of the skill correctly.

Student cannot perform the skill correctly.

Approach

Students should use proper footwork:
Left handed: left, right, left, jump.
Right handed: right, left, right, jump.

Good

Student demonstrates the correct approach. If left handed uses the L,R,L, then jumps approach. If right handed student uses R,L,R then jumps approach.
Fair

Student understands that they are supposed to take three steps but has difficuluty deciding what order they are supposed to go in. Take longer to put in order.
Poor

Student attempts the approach, but steps are inaccurate. The student may take more than three steps or fewer than three steps. Shows lack of understanding of volleyball approach.
Spike/Hit

Student should swing both arms back to their ear, non-dominant hand leads and points to the ball. Hand should be open when contacting the ball. Student should hit the ball at its highest point.

Good

Student swings both arms back to their ears. Extends non-dominant hand to lead and point to the ball. Right before contact student should look like they are holding a bow and arrow. Student contacts ball with open hand and at its highest point.
Fair

Student swings both arms back but does not contact the ball at its highest point. Student contacts the ball with fingers touching instead of open hand.
Poor

Student does not swing both arms back and does not have one arm leading. Student contacts the ball below their head instead of at the highest point. Student also hits volleyball with closed fist.
Follow Through

Student should swing arm down after contact snapping their wrist without touching the net. Hitting arm should follow through past waist.

Good

Student should finish the spike with snapping their hitting hand and following through past their waist. Student should land in same spot as takeoff and should not come into contact with the net.
Fair

Student demonstrates the full arm swing but lacks power. They lead with the non dominant hand but do not snap their wrist. They do not follow through past their waist after hitting the volleyball.
Poor

Student shows no follow through after hitting the volleyball. They run into the net upon completion of spike. They do not snap their wrist after hitting the volelyball.
