Developing ideas and mask patterns, and construction of form.

Advanced

Sketches are exceptional, showing both emotions and patterns. At least 5 unique designs. Advanced Design concept readily communicates function as well as emotion.
Proficient

Sketches are strong and varied ideas presented. At least 4 unique designs showing emotions and patterns. Design concept relays a competent communication of function and emotion.

Sketches are incomplete with less than 3 unique ideas presented. Weak use of emotional expression and poor pattern development. Design concept does not communicate its function nor show clear emotions.
Technical Skills; Craftsmanship
2.5 pts

Using template and slab techniques along with one other hand building tech.

Advanced

Uniform slab consistency; surface dimension is exceptional; edges are smooth & overall craftsmanship accomplished with excellence. Use of a template is apparent.
Proficient

Uniform slab mostly consistent; surface dimension is good; edges are mostly smooth & overall craftsmanship accomplished with skill. Use of a template is apparent.
Basic

Slabs are not consistent; relief moderately enhances the 3/D effect but is not well-blended; craftsmanship of edges and outcome should be improved. Use of template and/or other building technique not apparent.
Below Basic

Slab not consistent; relief is weak or not well blended and does little to enhance 3/D effect; edges are not smooth and craftsmanship is weak. No use of other hand building technique or template used.
Surface Treatment
2 pts

Texture may be pressed, carved or added.

Advanced

Surface design shows excellent ability to apply texture that clearly enhances the form; precise and careful attention to detail.
Proficient

Surface design shows satisfactory ability to apply texture that enhances the form; careful attention to detail.
Basic

Surface design shows moderate ability to apply texture, some attention to detail.
Below Basic

Surface design shows weak ability apply texture; little or no surface variation that do not enhance the overall aesthetic of the piece; weak attention to detail.
Creativity in Clay Design
1.5 pts

Inventiveness, expression of emotion, ideas and imagination portrayed in the construction of project.

Advanced

The artwork demonstrates original personal expression and creative use of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.
Proficient

The artwork demonstrates some personal expression and shows use of a moderate amount of use of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design
Basic

The artwork demonstrates an average amount of personal expression and shows little use of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.
Below Basic

The artwork demonstrates little personal expression and minimal use of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design
Productivity in Clay Design
1 pts

Consistent work habits and use of problem solving skills.

Advanced

Student consistently used every minute of class time wisely; constantly challenging self to reflect, revise, and employ problem solving skills.
Proficient

Student mostly used every minute of class time wisely with consistent reflection, revision and work to develop craft.
Basic

Student did not always use class time well nor did student challenge self or revise.
Below Basic

Student rarely used class time well and showed no effort to challenge self or revise work.
Color Cocepts
2 pts
