Design Elements
Background	Expert Background is exceptionally attractive, consistent across pages, adds to the theme or purpose of the site, and does not detract from readability.	Journeyman Background is attractive, consistent across pages, adds to the theme or purpose of the site, and does not detract from readability.	Apprentice Background is consistent across pages and does not detract from readability.	Novice Background detracts from the readability of the site.
Colors	Expert Colors of background and fonts form a pleasing palette, do not detract from the content, and are consistent across pages. Layout	Expert The portfolio has an exceptionally attractive and usable layout. It is easy to locate all important elements. White space, graphic elements and/or alignment are used effectively to organize material.	Journeyman The portfolio has an attractive and usable layout. It is easy to locate all important elements.	Apprentice The portfolio has a usable layout, but may appear busy or boring. It is easy to locate most of the important elements.	Novice The portfolio is cluttered looking or confusing. It is often difficult to locate important elements.
Navigation	Expert Links for navigation are clearly labeled, consistently placed, allow the reader to easily move from a page to related pages (forward and back), and take the reader where s/he expects to go. A user does not become lost. Artifacts	Expert The artifacts clearly highlight your abilities as a graphic designer. Each example is shows your best effort and publishable quality. Content Accuracy	Expert All information provided by the student in the portfolio is accurate and all the requirements of the assignment have been met. Written Reflection	Expert Appropriate and complete reflections for each artifact are provided. Apprentice The author has put lots of information in the portfolio but there is little evidence that the person tried to present the information in an interesting way.	Novice The author has provided only the minimum amount of information and has not transformed the information to make it more interesting to the audience.
Learning	Expert The student has an exceptional understanding of the material covered in the course and has shown clear evidence of growth throughout the course.	Journeyman The student has a good understanding of the material included in the course and has shown good personal growth in graphic design abilities.	Apprentice The student has a fair understanding of the material included in the course and has shown some growth in design abilities.	Novice Student did not appear to learn much from this course. Minimal growth in design abilities.
Overall Quality	Expert Looks very well put together, professional in appearance, and shows creativity in design. Shows great knowledge of the basics of graphic design.
