The student can sometimes determine percent ionic character, but does not yet understand the relationship of this calculation to attractive forces within a bond.

The student can determine percent ionic character, and can sometimes connect this calculation to the determination of an ionic or covalent bond. More understanding of the attractive forces within a bond is needed.

The student knows how atoms from ionic and covalent bonds, and can use percent ionic character calculations to explain the type of bond.

The student can easily differentiate between and ionic/covalent bond by looking at location of bonding elements on periodic table & can teach the conceptual differences to others.

The student can write the names of binary ionic bonds, but struggles with naming polyvalent metals in bonding and all other types of bonds.

The student can write names for ionic and covalent bonds, but struggles with polyvalent metals and acid names.

Student can write the chemical formulas of common polyatomic ions, ionic compounds (main/transition) covalent compounds, acids, and bases.

Student creates a template that provides a flowchart/pathway for naming all types of bonds - ionic, covalent, acids, bases, including both classic names and stock system names for both ionic & covalent bonds.
