Layering of Color & Blending

High level of understanding

Student has layered several colors to create rich, vibrant colors. The work appears to have a great deal of depth due to the layers of color and the blending has a soft "velvet-like" quality. Student has shown the layer & blending throughout the work.
Above average concept & application

Student has created a work which shows they have the knowledge of layering and they can create a work at a relatively high level using this concept.
Student has properly blended, but they need to be consistent throughout the entire work.
Average understanding of concept

Student has a basic understanding of using colors for layering, but the student needs to look closer at the various colors that make up the image. Blending is acceptable, but could use more care with blending and softening edges of color.
Low level of concept

Student has only used 1 or 2 colors to build up areas and does not show they understand the concept of layering color pencil.
Blending needs a great more attention and patience.
Unacceptable quality

Student has done extremely low level work and quickly rushed the assignment because they did not have their resources by the deadline, wasted time, or did not practice the concept prior to getting started. Student does not show an understanding of blending or layering.
Technical aspects of drawing

High level of understanding

Student used their collage and drew the information very accurate and began with a highly detailed drawing -student used careful observation and drawing techniques learned earlier. (grid, mapping, trapped-shapes).
Above average concept & application

Student has created a close resemblance of the collage they created and the overall drawing shows good observation skills and awareness of the subject matter. The overall work has a good representation to that of the collage, more detail could enhance the overall work.
Average understanding of concept

Student has started a good likeness to that of the collage. The work has some good detail while other areas seem to be rushed or lacked concentration. Focus and work without distraction or ask for help when needed.
Low level of concept

Student needs to slow down, observe closer or use drawing techniques they have been taught.
Better use of class time or focusing on the project would help you out. Look closer, ask for help and concentrate while in class. Ask for help when needed.
Unacceptable quality

Student needs to begin with a stronger drawing if they expect to have a successful work in the end.
Student may need to begin with simple subject matter until observation and drawing skills improve.
Concentration and avoidance of conversation would help you.
Composition/layout

High level of understanding

Student appears to have planned and organized subject matter in a way that has used the space provided in an interesting way that does not lead the viewer off the page. Elements have been considered and the visual keeps the viewers eye involved with the work.
Above average concept & application

Student used the space in a way that utilized the space appropriately. Take more time and think about ways to create a stronger focal point and ways to keep the viewer involved in your work through the use of line, color or a combination of the elements or principles of art.
Average understanding of concept

Student layout is acceptable, but more thought and planning needs be considered. Think about ways to capture the interest of the viewer and keep the viewer involved in your work by considering the aspects of a strong layout/composition.
Low level of concept

Student needs to consider and play with more layout considerations before just randomly placing objects on the page.
Student may need to do some small thumbnail sketches and research or review strong compositions/layouts.
Unacceptable quality

Little to no planning is apparent and lack of time could also be an issue. Need to have your materials on the day the project starts and get after the assignment. Plan, think and organize how objects are placed on a page.
Theme & message

High level of understanding

Student has created a strong theme or message that the viewer can easily identify or the image has such a strong visual impact that the work stands on its own without much of an overall message. All parts of the work are so strong the piece just comes together through the other criteria-UNITY
Above average concept & application

Students has a good message or theme. The work and objects all work together to convey the work is about nature, animals or a social issue among a variety of other themes that are possible. Student used visuals that corresponded with each other to create a sound idea or concept.
Average understanding of concept

Student needs to consider what visuals will convey their message better; while some elements of the drawing worked well, other areas did not really seem to work with the entire piece. Possibly keep things simple and don't overdue with to much imagery or vice-versa.
Low level of concept

Student has not pulled off the theme or concept they are trying to express.
Student may have failed to find their own resources and relied on the teachers resources for this project and therefore lacked interest instead of using subject matter that inspires them.
Unacceptable quality

Student lacked a theme or overall concept to create a work that either had a message, hobby or student lacks interest in general and therefore cannot come up with strong concepts as it relates to their drawing or art in general.
