Metal Lathe Project - Aluminum Pen Kit

Students will create a lathe-turned aluminum pen on a metal lathe. Project requires face turning, end drilling, and outside turning.

Fabrication Fundamentals Fabrication Procedures. Facing, drilling, and outside turning on metal lathe.	Fair Has some understanding of facing, drilling, and outside turning procedures and attempts fabricating parts of pen project within plan tolerances.	Good Has a good understanding of facing, drilling, and outside turning procedures and is able to create a pen pieces on lathe.	Excellent Fully understands facing, drilling, and outside turning procedures. Is capable of creating pen pieces to fit as an integral part of a bigger project
Quality Control Quality of workmanship.	Fair Not very particular with how the product looks or how well it functions. Does only what is absolutely necessary. Does not pay attention to details.	Good Likes to see a finished and functional product at the end of fabrication. Will leave items out even though there is time to correct.	Excellent Takes pride in his/her work. Keeps trying working until problems are figured out and the desired results are achieved. Pays attention to the small details.
Accuracy/Measurement Ability to use tools to maintain accuracy.	Fair Project shows student is not paying attention to accuracy of pen kit dimensions. Pieces are either far too big or too small.	Good Project shows student is paying attention to accuracy of pen kit dimensions only some of the time. Overall accuracy is acceptable.	Excellent Student shows ability to utilize lathe to create pieces for pen kit that are accurate in dimensions to technical specifications.
Tool Usage Ability to utilize tools to create a finished product.	Fair Student is able to utilize the tools to, create a product but does not maintain consistent proper usage which effects final product outcome drastically. Lots of tooling marks remain on pieces and sanding is inadequate.	Good Project shows the student needs some more help understanding how to use the tools properly to have a well produced product. Some tooling marks remain on pieces and sanding is acceptable.	Excellent Project shows student has full understanding of proper use of tools. No sanding or tooling marks remain and pieces are nicely polished.
