Standard
Design Process Standard: As citizens of the constructed world, students will participate in the design process. Students will learn to use materials and tools safely and employ the basic principles of the engineering design process in order to find solutions to problems.
ASK:Identify the Problem / Question

Does not Meet Standard

Student does not understand the problem they are trying to solve or question they are trying to answer.
Partially Meets Standard

Student has a basic understanding of the problem they are solving or question they are answering.
Meets the Standard

Student has a clear understanding of the problem they are solving or question they are answering.
Exceeds the Standard

Student has an in depth understanding of the problem they are solving or question they are answering.
RESEARCH: Think / Brainstorming

(Ideas or Sketches)

Does not Meet Standard

Student failed to produce an idea/solution for the project within the specifications.
Partially Meets Standard

Student produced a single idea/solution for the prototype. Sketch was not detailed and the information was difficult to convert into a detailed design drawing.
Meets the Standard

Student produced a single idea/solution for the prototype. Sketch was easily converted into a detailed design/drawing.
Exceeds the Standard

Student came up with multiple ideas/solutions for the prototype within the specifications given and converted the ideas into sketches that were easily converted into a detailed design/drawing.
IMAGINE: Develop a Plan

Design / Drawing

Does not Meet Standard

Student failed to produce a detailed design drawing.
Partially Meets Standard

Drawing was created directly from the sketch following all specifications given. Drawing is missing many key details, dimensions, and notes necessary to build the object.
Meets the Standard

Drawing was created directly from the sketch following all specifications given. Drawing has key details, dimensions, and notes necessary to build the object.
Exceeds the Standard

Drawing was created directly from the sketch following all specifications given. Drawing is very detailed and contains all dimensions and notes necessary to build the object.
PLAN and CREATE: Build

Create or experiment with the prototype

Does not Meet Standard

Prototype is built without any of the specifications stated in the detailed drawing and was not carefully thought out.
Partially Meets Standard

Prototype is built with some accuracy according to the specifications stated in the detailed drawing and had some thought put into the process.
Meets the Standard

Prototype is built with accuracy according to the specifications stated in the detailed drawing and appears to have much thought put into the process.
Exceeds the Standard

Prototype is built to the exact specifications stated in the detailed drawing and has in depth thought put into the process of building.
TEST

Observe and evaluate the design

Does not Meet Standard

Student fails to use the prototype to test the design and does not make any changes to the final product in order to meet specifications.
Partially Meets Standard

N/A
Meets the Standard

Student uses the prototype to make sure that all design specifications are met. Records data and observations about the performance of the prototype.
Exceeds the Standard

N/A
IMPROVE

Make modifications to improve the design

Does not Meet Standard

Student fails to make any attempt to modify their prototype to improve their design or performance.
Partially Meets Standard

Student made one modification with no clear plan of how their modifications will improve their design or performance.
Meets the Standard

Student made thoughtful modifications with a clear description of how they think the modification will improve their design.
Exceeds the Standard

Student made thoughtful modifications with a clear description of how they think the modification will improve their design and resulted in an improved performance.
Communication of the Solution
Communicate the solution (including evidence) using mathematical representations (e.g., graphs, data tables), drawings or prototypes.
