Football: Passing and Catching Football: Passing and Catching Secondary evaluation of the fundemental skill of passing and catching a football. Students are rated and scored on the mechanics of their passing and catching is the primary emphasis and accuracy is the secondary emphasis. There are 18 points possible. Football Passing/Catching
	Not Acceptable 1 pts	Acceptable 2 pts	Proficient 3 pts
Grip: all fingers on top, thumb underside.	Not Acceptable Uses both hands, can not hang on to ball with one hand.	Acceptable Hangs on with one hand, but needs to choke up on the ball to gain more control of ball.	Proficient Uses four fingers on top, thumb on underside. Able to keep control of ball and successfully chokes up on the ball to keep control of the football.
Arm position: prior to the throw.	Not Acceptable Does not remember or attempt to get the arm back in the "L" position.	Acceptable Gaining more consistency in getting the throwing arm back in the "L" position.	Proficient Stretches back and creates an "L" with the arm bent at 90°'s.
Stance/step	Not Acceptable Does not remember or attempt to step forward with the completion of the throw.	Acceptable Gaining more consistency on taking a small step forward.	Proficient On completion of the throw, takes one small step forward.
Release of Ball	Not Acceptable Releases somewhere other than 2:00. Non throwing hand does not assist and does not finish at 10:00	Acceptable Gaining consistency, but fails to release at the 2:00 target release point. Non throwing hand does not assist in the release.	Proficient Throwing hand extends forward and releases at 2:00, while the non throwing hand is extended and balanced at 10:00.
Follow through and accuracy	Not Acceptable Does not attempt to follow through with the palm or thumb finishing down. Ball does not spiral on throw. Lacks distance.	Acceptable Gaining a stronger attempt at follow through of the palm and thumb finishing down. Lacks distance and consistent spiral motion.	Proficient Palm turns out, ball comes off the index finger, thumb finishes down. Ball moves in a spiral turn most of the attempted throw.
Catching the Football Hand Action, Eyes, Tuck the ball	Not Acceptable Does not attempt to use the diamond catch. Misses over 75% of thrown footballs.	Acceptable Gaining a consistency in using the diamond shape and soft hands to catch and hang onto the football.	Proficient Uses the big hands, reaches out, with diamond shape. Brings the ball in with soft hands. Lacks the consistency on tucking in the football for protection.
