Mandalas - 7th grade 
In this lesson, the students learned about the history of mandalas.They then created their own unique mandalas using mix media of sand, gel pens, construction paper crayons and pencils, and glitter glue.

Viewed resource materials for inspiration only. Was able to create own unique design with no visible resemblance to resource materials. No other like it in class.

Craftsmanship

Excellent

Student's media skill level is exceptional. All media used is done with great time and care. Nothing could be added or taken away to improve the mandala.The patterns have radial symmetry, and the lines are clean.
Good

Skill level is on grade level. Student's use of media was very good with exception of a few places which need some extra added time.The patterns have some radial symmetry, and the lines are clean.
Fair

More time was given in use of media, but still had problems in filling in spaces with sand and mixing crayons, pencil. pens, and glitter glue. The patterns have some radial symmetry, but lines may not be clean. May have some unfinished white space.
Poor

Skill level of all mediums very low. Sloppily done.
Color

Excellent

Student shows clear skill in use of complimentary colors or dark and light colors while creating added contrast of some areas coming forward and others going back by the use of the different textured colored media.

Color was thought out with emphasis on contrast created by use of different colored textured media. Evidence of use of color wheel not evident.
Fair

Some thought given to how colors work, but with minimal contrast.
Poor

Colors blend together with no real evidence of contrast. No thought given to use of color.
Process

Excellent

The center point is emphasized and is clearly at the very center with a symbol. The four cardinal points are clearly scene and identified.
Good

The center point is emphasized but maybe a little too enlarged. There is evidence of either four cardinal points or entrances.
Fair

There is a center point emphasized but the four cardinal points or entrances which lead one inside are not visible.
Poor

There is no center point emphasized nor any type of four cardinal points.
Time Management

Excellent

Student used every minute of class to make the artwork the best quality piece. Was not turned in early or late.
Good

Student used class time to make the artwork the best quality piece, but needed 1 redirection to stay focused. Was turned in 1 day early or late.
Fair

Student used some class time to make the artwork the best quality piece, but needed MANY redirection to stay focused. Was turned in 2 days early or late.
Poor

Student did not use class time well to finish piece.
