African Dance Sequence

Students will be assessed on various performance quality elements while applying african dance characteristics. Students must be able to clearly identify the characteristics through the movement.

Technical Skills 50 % The movements clearly demonstrate African characteristics.	Rockstar Dancer! Dance performed with great attention to quality of movement, body position, characteristics Also demonstrates an excellent understanding of African Dance dance style. 25pts	Nice Job Dancer Dance performed with attention to details of the characteristics has attained proficiency in African dance style. 20pts	Keep Working Dancer Dance performed with attention to most details of the characteristics, but hasn't attained proficiency in African Dance dance style yet. Some technical errors. 15pts	Dancer Challenges Basic understanding of the characteristics (ie. isolations, rooted to the floor, polycentric, polyrhythmic) demonstrated in performance. Several technical errors are made while performing. 10pts
Performance Skills/Readiness 20 % Projection of eye contact and facial expressions with the class and teacher. The dancer is confident with movements. Dancer is prepared with proper clothing.	Rockstar Dancer! The dancer creates a believable character on stage and is able to engage the audience completely throughout their performance. Dancer is prepared in all black, barefoot, and tight fitted clothing. 10pts	Nice Job Dancer The dancer communicates with other dancers and audience through eye contact and facial and body expression. Is able to engage the audience. Dancer is missing one component of clothing. 8pts	Keep Working Dancer The dancer communicates with other dancers and audience through eye contact and facial and body expression. Occasionally loses focus. Dancer is missing 2 components of clothing. 6pts	Dancer Challenges The dancer is generally focused, but only some attempt made to communicate with others on stage or audience. Dancer is not prepared with proper clothing. 4pts
Rhythm/Tempo 20 % Staying on count and with the beats of the music.	Rockstar Dancer! Shows a complete understanding of tempo and beat and stays on rhythm throughout the dance. 10pts	Nice Job Dancer Accurate in beat, tempo, rhythms of dance sequences throughout the dance. 8pts	Keep Working Dancer Shows a basic understanding of tempo and beat, but falls behind and/or speeds up in places or makes errors in rhythm. 6pts	Dancer Challenges Attempts to keep a rhythm, but gets off beat and speeds up or falls behind often. Doesn't follow beat in music. 4pts
Knowledge of choreography 10 % Execution of the moves tell a story through communication and is all done in sync.	Rockstar Dancer! Demonstrates excellent knowledge of the choreography. Is completely rhythmically accurate. 5pts	Nice Job Dancer Demonstrates good knowledge of choreography. Keeps up with group. Few errors, however it does not interfere with performance. 4pts	Keep Working Dancer Demonstrates knowledge of choreography. Keeps up with group. Some errors, causing brief pause in performance. 3pts	Dancer Challenges Demonstrates some knowledge of choreography, but unsure of movements. Often hesitates/ watches others; makes several errors 2pts
