	Poor 0 pts	Fair 1.5 pts	Good 2.5 pts
Participation 25 % Engaged for the full length of discussion	Poor Student is not engaged for the full class period and is involved in other distracting behaviors (emailing, on the internet, completing other assignments, talking about other topics, texting, etc.)	Fair Student is mostly engaged in the discussion with their group, though they may at times go off topic or become distracted. They contribute minimally.	Good Student is actively engaged in the discussion with their group throughout the 50 minute period. They are not doing other assignments or otherwise distracted, and they are contributing actively to the conversation.
Critical Thinking 25 % Exploring topics beyond just simple answers; applying topic to own life	Poor Student does not engage in thoughtful responses, consider various perspectives, respond to peers (instead of each person voicing an answer, the students respond to what the other people say), or think beyond just the current reading.	Fair Student somewhat engages in thoughtful responses but struggles to consider various perspectives, or does not respond to peers (students may all respond to a question, but they are not responding to what each other person is saying), does not necessarily go beyond current readings.	Good Student engages in thoughtful responses, considers various perspectives, responds to peers (instead of each person voicing an answer, the students respond to what the other people say), think beyond just the current reading.
Connecting to Topic 25 % Focusing on the current article topic and connecting with the race-related content	Poor Student does not stay on topic, does not address questions presented by instructor (or addresses them minimally), and does not relate material to other course content.	Fair Student mostly stays on topic, though may only spend a minute or two on each question presented by instructor or does not relate material to other course content.	Good Student stays on topic throughout discussion, addresses the questions presented by the instructor, connects material to other articles read or lecture material.
Respect 25 % Respecting other group members and the classroom overall	Poor Student is not respectful of other responses or is not paying attention to peers.	Fair Student is mostly respectful of other responses but may not be open to hearing other thoughts or may not be paying attention to all peers.	Good Student is respectful of other people's responses. Does not interrupt others, does not use derogatory language, listens to other explanations. Open to hearing different thoughts. Is paying attention to peers.
