Still Life and Graphite Techniques
This is an assignment to teach the student the power of shading values, by drawing a still life. Shadows make parts of the artwork appear to go back. Highlights bring other parts toward us. A gradient is a subtle change from shadows to highlights. Gradients done right give the appearance of 3D forms, not just shapes.

Pencil Use

Excellent

Student used more than one pencil to achieve a high range of values. Students used their hand pressure accurately for creating gradients and values. Students used techniques to draw light and/or angled pencil differently to achieve different pressures and textures. Student clearly understood the types of pencils and how to apply them into their still life to capture shadows and highlights.
Good

Student used more than one pencil to achieve a range of values, but could have create more values. Student used techniques demonstrated in class on their piece but needed a bit more control.
Satisfactory

Student used more than one drawing pencil to achieve a range of values, but the values were limited. Student needed a bit more control with pressure and angle of pencils.
Needs Improvement

it isn't clear that the student used more than one drawing pencil. The range of value is very limited. The student did not understand when to use which pencils for specific areas design in the still life. Student has a piece that is rushed and needed to used much more control and effort.
Blending

Excellent

Blending tools were used accurately to create a range of values that blended into each other. Student created excellent gradients that made the objects feel real in the drawing. Student used the blending tool and the pressure of their hand to pencil to paper both in their piece to create multiple textures.
Good

Blending tools were used but artist needed a little more time and effort to blend and transition values into each other a bit better. Student may have relied too much on the blending tool or not enough. Blending might have needed a little more control.
Satisfactory

Blending is somewhat smooth, but inconsistent. Gradients seem a bit rushed and not controlled enough. Artist may have needed more graphite in areas to blend better or less graphite.
Needs Improvement

Blending is messy and inconsistent because the artist chose not to give the project the attention and time it needed.
Drawing

Excellent

Drawing very much illustrates the still life setup in class. Artist took their time to identify the basic shapes and then started to fine tune them. The student drew each object very well. They even included the background. Didn't draw dark enough where hard outlines were distracting.
Good

Student drew the still life items pretty well. Some minor angles or lines might be slightly off, but it resembles the still life very much. Might have drawn a bit too dark leaving some outlining still visible.
Satisfactory

Student drew the pieces in the still life, but needed more time and attention to the size and shape of them. The drawing still resembles the still life but artist needed to work more on observing the pieces and making corrections when needed. Student may have drawn too dark when outlining the shapes in the beginning.
Needs Improvement

Student may have drawn way too dark leaving the piece with many outlines and mistakes that are visible. Student did not try to observe the pieces setup in the still life very well and rushed the process.
Composition and Size

Excellent

Student included background and all of the items in their final drawing. Students used the paper space very well and drew not too big or small. The drawing is centered around the objects and the background should not have taken over.
Good

Student included background, but it may have been a bit too much of it or not enough. Student may have drawn items too big or too small, not leaving enough space for certain items. Student did however, plan their piece out before jumping right in and drawing.
Satisfactory

Student didn't really consider the background of layout very well. You can tell the student just jumped into the piece without laying out where each item should go and their basic size and shape.
Needs Improvement

Student drew way too big or too small. Student did not plan out their drawing.
Craftsmanship

Excellent

Went above and beyond. Took great care of their paper. Very little errors or smudges that are visible. Took risks with pencil techniques.Spent as much of class as possible for the week working on their piece and it paid off!
Good

Student did what was expected. Might have had a few errors that are still visible. Paper was taken care of with a little damage. Worked throughout the class, but could have used time a bit better. Phone or friends could have been somewhat of a distraction.
Satisfactory

Student spent each day working on piece, but was easily distracted. Errors are visible. Paper needed to be taken care of a bit more.
Needs Improvement

Minimal effort and care.
