Coil Mug Design
Advanced
Unique pattern or imagery containing 3 or more coil styles. Evident that thought and time went into design process.
Proficient
Pattern or imagery is successful using 3 coil styles. Some might be repeated but appears balanced.
Approaching
Pattern or imagery is somewhat visible but hard to distinguish three coil styles. Limited effort during design process.
Not Proficient
Pattern or imagery is not visible. Does not consist of 3 coil styles.
Craftsmanship
Advanced
Coils have consistent thickness throughout the mug. Mug rim is level and smooth. Handle is cleanly attached and fits the vessel well. Blending is smooth in the inside of the vessel. Free of unwanted seams.
Proficient
Coils are mostly consistent thickness. Time was spent cleaning up areas. Handle is attached. Inside is mostly smooth.
Approaching
Coils have a variety of thicknesses which makes inside and/or outside uneven. Little attention paid to smoothing inside and necessary areas on the outside. Contains some open seams. Mug is not level.
Not Proficient
Student did not use coil method as the main building method. Coils did not stay together and very uneven thickness all around. Mug is not level and has open seams even after blending. Sharp areas, not a functional piece.
Glazing
Advanced
Unique glazing application. Glaze appears opaque and glossy. Used a minimum of 2 colors in their color scheme. Can successfully hold liquid.
Proficient
Mug was glazed using 2 colors. Mostly uniform glaze application, created food safe seal inside.
Approaching
Student did not glaze the mug with at least 2 colors. Glaze application is uneven with areas that are opaque and areas where clay is visible. Not food safe.
Not Proficient
Coil mug was not glazed and/or the coil mug is a single color and glaze application is extremely uneven. Cannot hold liquid.
