Group Dance Composition

Students are required to create their own dances, in groups no larger than four students. Dance routines are required to be 1-2 minute in duration. Dance moves learned in class as well as your own are encouraged to be incorporated in your dance routines. All three levels must be used throughout your dance as well as a balance. At least three different steps must be used. There must also be a variety of upper and lower body movements. Phrases and motifs must be clear within the composition.

Group Work/ Preparation	Poor Work reflects very little effort on the part of this group. Group enthusiasm is low. Very little effort/ time spent preparing for the performance.	Basic Work reflects okay effort from this group. The group shows some interest for their work.Minimal time/ effort spent preparing for the performance.	Good Work reflects a good effort from the group. The group is generally enthusiastic. The group put a sufficient amount of time/ effort into preparing for the performance.	Excellent Work reflects the strong efforts of the group. The group is enthusiastic and positive. The group used their time effectively. The group gave 100% effort preparing for the performance.
Group Creativity	Poor Group repeats dances taught in class. No attempt to create anything new.	Basic Group attempts to create something new, but simply rearranges taught patterns.	Good Group attempts and succeeds at creating something new. Group uses dance styles from class in new original ways.	Excellent Group creates a successful, dynamic new routine with creative combinations.
Technical skills	Poor Although remembers some of dance, little attention paid to how movements are done or other details of dance. Not all three levels were used. There was less than three steps used. Motif and phrases are not clear nor were they used.	Basic Only some understanding of technical elements (ie. footwork, quality of movements, body positions, and spatial awareness) demonstrated in performance. Not all three levels were used. Rhythm/Tempo	Poor Attempts to keep a rhythm, but gets off beat and speeds up or falls behind often. Doesn't follow beat in music.	Basic Shows basic understanding of tempo and beat, but falls behind and/or speeds up or makes errors in rhythm.	Good Generally accurate in beat, tempo, rhythms of dance sequences most of the time.	Excellent Shows a complete understanding of tempo and beat and stays on rhythm throughout the dance. There is a flow to the steps used.
