Approach

Students should take three steps. Right, Left, Right, and Jump.

Does not execute skill

Student just runs up to the ball without a thoughtful approch.
Needs Improvement

Student understands that there are three steps, but has difficulty putting steps and jump together.
Compentent

Student has the footsteps down, but is not quick on their steps, and their jump is not explosive.
Meets/Exceeds Skill Level

Student shows the correct approach and jumps with explosion.
Spike

Athlete should demonstrate right arm swing back by ear, and left arm lead.

Does not execute skill

The student does not show the right arm back bent at the elbow. Has no left-arm lead. The student winds up like a windmill instead of the proper bent technique.
Needs Improvement

Student demonstrates right hand arm swing, but left arm is either at the side of their body or they are not showing a leading left arm.
Compentent

The student understands the concept of a bent elbow, but the right hand may not be close to the ear. Left arm lead may be present but may not demonstrate a fully extended left arm.
Meets/Exceeds Skill Level

Student shows the right hand bent at the elbow close to the ear, and the left arm is leading in front. The student looks like they are holding a bow and arrow suspended in the air.
Follow Through

Athlete should complete the full arm swing, wrist snap, and recoil hand back away from net.

Does not execute skill

The student cannot perform the arm swing, and the wrist is not snapping.
Needs Improvement

Student can demonstrate the follow through arm swing but does not demonstrate the wrist snap.
Compentent

The student understands the full arm swing concept but doesn't demonstrate power in the follow-through. There may be a wrist snap.
Meets/Exceeds Skill Level

Student finishes the spike with the right hand finishing the swing. There is power behind this swing/follow through Student demonstrates a wrist snap at the peak of the swing.
