Knees are constantly in the way of the poles.
Poles often come out of hands when beating.
Does not slide pole along board.
Does not open poles wide enough.
Has great difficulty maintaining any rhythm or beat with the poles.

Occasionally knees are in the way while poling; Has loose grip on poles causing a pole to bounce out of hand, on occasion.
Occasionally lifts poles up too high rather than sliding on board;
On occasion does not open poles wide enough;
Has difficulty maintaining beat for a full 8 counts.

Demonstrates sitting or kneeling properly at end of pole.
Firm grasp around outside of pole.
Slides pole along board.
Opens pole to proper width
Maintains rhythm and beat for 8 counts.

Has great difficulty attempting any kind of doubles step in and out of the poles.
Has no smooth movement in and out of the poles.
Poles are not moving.

Performs a step with two feet in the middle of the poles at the same time, and two feet on the outside at the same time (either together or in a straddle).
Struggles trying to maintain a smooth, rhythmic movement in and out of the poles.
