Locomotor Skills Different types of movement

Running A form of locomotion much like the walk except that the tempo is increased. There is no time when both feet are on the ground simultaneously.	Needs Improvement Cannot run.	Developing Rarely runs looking straight ahead. Little or no arm movement. Runs flat footed. (1 movement)	Progressing Towards Goal Usually looks straight ahead with some arm movement. Feet not facing forward. (2 movements)	GOAL Looks straight ahead while running and feet and arms are moving in a straight line in the direction of movement. Weight is on the balls of the feet. (3 movements - head up, arms pump, fast speed)
Hopping Balanced movement from one foot to the same foot.	Needs Improvement Cannot hop.	Developing Cannot balance on one foot on take off or landing (1 movement)	Progressing Towards Goal Hops mostly on one foot but does not use the other foot as well or at all (2 movements)	GOAL Can hop balanced on either foot. Landing is soft and controlled. (3 movements -head up, arms out, takeoff and land on one foot)
Skipping A locomotor skill which combines a hop and a step (walk or run). The rhythm is uneven	Needs Improvement Cannot skip.	Developing Performs step/hop but not completely fluent. (1 movement)	Progressing Towards Goal Performs coordinated movement most of the time. (2 movements)	GOAL Performs coordinated movement all of the time.(3 movements - head up, arms out or swinging, step hop pattern)
Galloping A form of locomotion which is a combination of an open step by the leading foot and a closed step by the trailing foot. The same foot leads throughout. The rhythm is uneven.	Needs Improvement Cannot gallop.	Developing Walk or run. Back foot crosses front foot. Turns to side. (1 movement)	Progressing Towards Goal Back foot sometimes crosses front. (2 movements)	GOAL Non-support gallop, leads with 1 foot and has an uneven rhythm. (3 movements -head up, arms out, lead foot and trail foot)
Chasing A form of locomotion in which the (runs after another with all components of running).	Needs Improvement Cannot chase.	Developing Rarely runs looking straight ahead. Little or no arm movement. Runs flat footed. Chasing not evident. (1 movement)	Progressing Towards Goal Usually looks straight ahead with some arm movement. Feet not facing forward. Chasing barely evident. (2 movements)	GOAL Looks straight ahead while running and feet and arms are moving in a straight line in the direction of movement. Weight is on the balls of the feet. Chasing clearly evident. (3 movements - head up, arms pump, fast speed)
Flee Runs from another with all components of running.	Needs Improvement Cannot flee.	Developing Rarely runs looking straight ahead. Little or no arm movement. Runs flat footed. Fleeing not evident.
