Shooting Form in Basketball
This rubric will be used to assess each of the critical elements used in shooting a basketball. Each critical element will be assessed on a scale of 1-4 points for a total rubric score of 20 points.

Bending of the knees
Poor
Student is not bending at the knees at all, no power is coming from legs, only shooting ball using power from arms.
Fair
Student is bending knees at greater than a 45 degree angle, allowing for very little power coming from legs and mainly pushing ball towards basket when shooting with arms.
Good
Student is bending knees at less than a 45 degree angle, allowing legs to generate some type of power but more strength coming from arms.
Excellent
Student is bending knees at a 45 degree angle, allowing legs to generate power for shot.
Hand placement on ball
Poor
Student has both dominant and non-dominant hands placed in the center of the ball. No guide hand on the side. Using both hands to generate power with elbows pointed out to the sides of the body.
Fair
Student has dominant hand placed off to the side of the middle of the ball with non-dominant hand placed completely on the side of the ball the side of the middle of the ball. Student is pushing ball with arms moving across the body instead of straight and up.
Good
Student has dominant hand placed on the middle (exactly in the center) of ball to generate good amount of power with guide hand/non-dominant hand on the side of the ball/slightly towards the middle to help direct some aim of the ball when shooting but goes sideways.
Excellent
Student has dominant hand placed on the middle (slightly below center) of ball to generate strong amount of power with guide hand/non-dominant hand on the side of the ball to help direct the aim of the ball when shooting and ball goes straight to basket.
Bending of elbow
Poor
Student's elbow is forming a less than 90 degree angle with angles pointing to sides of body and not in front of body. Ball is held at chest height.
Fair
Student's elbow forms a 90 degree angle but ball is brought down to chest height and side of body when shooting. Angle of elbow is on the side of body.
Good
Student's elbow forms a 90 degree angle but ball is brought down to chest height but still in front of body when shooting. Ball is kept at eye level.
Excellent
Student's elbow is bent and forming a 90 degree angle in front of the body with ball at eye level.
Eyes up and looking at basket
Poor
Eyes not looking at basket, staying fixed on the basketball.
Fair
Eyes looking/fixed on basket for a few seconds before eyes move to look at ball and back to basket.
Good
Eyes looking/fixed on basket, aiming for entire basket other than rim or square on backboard.
Excellent
Eyes looking/fixed on basket, aiming for the rim or square on the backboard.
Follow Through
Poor
Student is finishing shot by flicking wrist of dominant and non-dominant hand. Hands are immediately dropped to sides after ball is released.
Fair
Student is finishing shot by flicking wrist of dominant hand but arm is moving across the body. Hands are immediately dropped to sides after ball is released.
Good
Student is finishing shot by flicking wrist of dominant hand but arm is moving across the body instead of moving straight up.
Excellent
Student is finishing shot by flicking wrist of the dominant hand and "placing their hand in the cookie jar". Follow through is held up above head after ball is released.
