This rubric gives different criteria for legs/feet, arms and upper body form for jogging or distance running.

Upper Body Position

Beginner

Upper body completely vertical
Shoulders are high ('creep' up around ears)
Intermediate

Upper body less vertical, no leaning forward
Shoulders remain low
Advanced

Upper body with slight forward lean for momentum
Shoulders remain level and do not dip from side to side
Arms

Beginner

High guard arm position (arms come up toward shoulder level)
Intermediate

Arms at middle guard (they are swung at lower chest, mid-torso level)
Arms in opposition to the legs
Elbows bent not quite 90 degrees; partially extended during the run
Advanced

Arms at low guard (natural running position)
Arms in complete opposition to legs
Complete elbow extension
Elbows at 90 degrees
Legs/Feet

Beginner

Flat foot contact
Wide stride (student runs with feet wider than shoulder width apart)
Intermediate

Heel-toe contact with the ground
Long Stride
High knee Lift
Advanced

Light Heel-toe contact, mid foot
Short efficient stride
Slight Knee lift
