Prepare the scale. Place a paper towel on the foot stand of the scale. Move both weights to zero position. If the end of the balance swings freely, the scale is balanced, and if it doesnt, its not balanced.

Assist the patient onto the scale. The patient should stand unassisted, with his/her feet on the center of the platform.

Move the large 50-pound weight to the right until the balance bar drops down on the lower guide. Move the smaller 1/4- pound weight until the balance bar swings freely halfway between the upper and lower guides. Add the two weights together to determine the patients correct weight. Recheck your reqading. Record the weight correctly.
