Body position and movement

Need Improvement

Body position nearly vertical. Student barely advances and frequently has to stop.
Fair

Body is at less than a 70 degree angle with the head and the student struggles to stay floating. The movement in the water is minimal at best.
Good

Body is at around 70 degrees horizontal and the head may be slightly positioned incorrectly (head too deep in the water or too high out of the water)
Excellent

Body is almost perfectly horizontal with the top leg near the surface of the water and one ear in the water.
Arms and Hands

Need Improvement

Arms don't have any coordination whatsoever.
Fair

Arms are very uncoordinated and inconsistent resulting in poor propulsion.
Good

Arms don't quite reach extension and make the action look rushed. It almost appears as if their arms are providing any propulsion.
Excellent

Lower arm reaches ahead while the upper arm reaches towards the swimmers legs. Both arms then come towards each other and meet at the swimmer's mid-section.
Leg Action

Need Improvement

Kick is completely uncoordinated resulting in the student not having any propulsion in the water.
Fair

Student does an uneven kick with one leg lagging behind the other. The kick looks erratic and provides very little propulsion.
Good

Inconsistent kick with the top leg coming out of the water. Sometimes one leg just doesn't follow the other.
Excellent

Legs do a perfect scissor kick with the top leg going forward and the back leg going backwards before coming together. Legs always stay in the water.
Breathing and Timing

Need Improvement

Student has trouble breathing because their head goes under water. Their coordination is completely off.
Fair

Breathing is erratic and their arms and legs are working at different times. The result is an uncoordinated inefficient stroke.
Good

Breathing is fairly relaxed but their arms and legs are not in perfect unison.
Excellent

Breathing is controlled and relaxed. The arms and legs extend at the same time resulting in a good propulsion and smooth glide.
