Students write a response to one book that they read each week. Students choose a question from a list inside their journal to answer.

My 5th grade students maintain reading logs for the books they are reading independently. Students are given freedom in choosing topics for their writing, so long as they are completing an entry after each independent reading session. They take their reading logs home on a daily basis to review with their parents and get them signed. I collect reading logs throughout the week (each student has a designated day that their log is to be turned in) and provide feedback.

This summary will contain multiple paragraphs. First: Title, author and a complete discription of at least 3 - 4 characters. Second: Descriptive Settings (Where did the story take place?) Third: The main events in order (What happened in the story?) Fourth: Why did you like or dislike the book. Fifth: Would or would you not you recommend this book to others in the classroom. 20-18=A, 17-16=B, 15-14=C, 13-12=D

This rubric will allow me to gauge students ability to read fluently, predict, comprehend, and retell the story.
