Assessment of Elementary Level Writing - 5th Grade - using figurative language

A rubric designed to apply generally to any Power Paragraph writing assignment in the Elementary Grades.

Students are selecting an animal, researching and writing about their animal, and designing a poster to aid them in their presentation. The presentation should tell about where their animal lives, what their animal eats, what their animal looks like, and why they choose the animal. Students may write their report notes on index cards, or use their posters to help them remember the important facts about their animal during their presentation.

The presentation should tell about the animal's habitat, what the animal eats, what the animal looks like, the life cycle of the animal, and interesting facts about the animal. Students may present their research using PowerPoint or a poster.

Students will compose responses to questions to measure comprehension and writing skills in all content areas.

6-trait writing rubric focus is on Ideas/Content and Organization. MLA formatting is used for presentation.

Upon completion of in-class practice of identifying and writing short stories that contain the main parts of a story, the learner will be able to effectively write and identify what components make up a story through descriptive details. With greater focus on Organization and word choice in the students writing.
