Using the concept of Appalachian Face Jugs, students will create a ceramic mug using slab construction techniques. Facial features will then be applied. Students will aspire to make the most outrageously ugly faces possible.

This lesson explores ways that ceramics vessels can give clues about how they were used in the past and to provide insight into the ideology of the cultures that created them. Students will examine a variety of ceramic vessels, discuss their meanings, functions, and original contexts, and create their own personally inspired clay vessels.

Students will accomplish the following SLOs in Ceramics; AII.5 The student will demonstrate proficiency and craftsmanship in the use of an expanded range of art media. AII.7 The student will employ the visual problem-solving process in the production of original works of art. AIII.6 AIII.8 Each area is worth 10 points.

Investigate the work and influence of a prominent Ceramic artist

Students will create an original Ceramic Mask inspired by cultures around the world. Mask will be an abstract symmetrical form with animal, bird, aquatic, human or mythological features. Slab form must have sculptural relief, textured with pressed repeated pattern well-crafted, painted with mixed acrylics and embellished with mixed media of raffia, jute, beads, feathers or other added mixed-media. 27-30=A; 24-26=B; 21-23=C; 18-20=D; 15-17=F
