First, read over both articles, along with their abstracts. Next, reverse outline the articles. Comparing your reverse outlines to the abstracts, identify which structural and content elements from the articles are included and which are left out. Finally, write up a template, or road-map, of what the abstract of a scientific article should include and what the rhetorical and practical purpose of the abstract is.

The summary involves briefly but accurately stating the key points of the article for a reader who has not read the original article. The critique begins by summarizing the article and then analyzes and evaluates the author’s research.
