Grade One Writing

Use mental math strategies, including estimation, to add and subtract whole numbers up to no more than 20. Automatic recall of addition and subtraction facts and use these facts to solve math problems. Solve equal group problems.

Students create computer programs with loops and events and write algorithms. Students will collaborate with each other, investigate different problem-solving techniques, persist in the face of difficult tasks and will create their an animated, interactive story.

Students will solve problems and create computational representations of mathematical situations by writing and executing code, including code that involves sequential events. Students worked to sort 2-D and 3-D shapes according to various attributes in various ways. Students worked to identify specific geometric properties for various shapes. Students constructed three-dimensions, and identify two-dimensional contained in their structures. Students identified shapes and objects that are symmetrical (those that have congruent halves). Students learned about how shapes can move (slides, flips, or turns).

Students looked at lots of commercials and practiced identifying the purpose and intended audience of simple media texts. Students expressed their thoughts and feelings about the media works. Students identified who makes some of the media we looked at. Students then identified some elements and characteristics of commercials, thought about their intended audience, and produced a commercial using some of the techniques they observed.
