Your assignment is to take on the role of a soldier in the Great War. You are to write a letter to a friend or family member describing life as a soldier living in the trenches and just returning from a battle.

Create a timeline using the information in an article called "Marching Toward War." Each point on the timeline should include detail so the reader can understand how World War I began.

Students are to find a piece of historical propaganda from the end of World War I to the end of World War II, and then modify it to represent a modern belief.

With a partner, plan a trip to six (6) key areas in either Canadian history, culture, or industry. Using Google Maps/Google Earth, plot out a logical trip that would take you to all these destinations (stay ground-based as much as possible) and provide a short description of why this place is important in Canadian history. Finally, groups will be asked to briefly present their trip to the class. Students are to make a propaganda brochure that would entice a person during World War I to support a)Victory Gardens, b)Women's roles in War, c)Joining the military. Posters are to include a slogan, summary, propaganda poster analysis, and opinion.

This rubric is for grading a Grade 12 World Cultures assignment.

This rubric is for grading a Grade 12 English assignment designed to prepare students for university level argumentative essays using quotations from texts. External research and citations are not required (See Meta-Essay Rubric).

Part A: Students write an interpretation of Beowulf from student-created text messages, using academic language and adapting texts to "invent" quotations. Part B: Using Archetype Colour Wheels, students select Beowulf two characters, identify and describe their archetypes, then compare each to a contemporary character from a book, television show or movie.

Part A: Students work in pairs to do a close reading of a section of Seamus Heaney's Beowulf, then create a text message string between two characters in modern language, while maintaining the theme and overall development of the poem. Part B: After the teacher organizes the text messages, students present their section to the class, resulting in "Beowulf: An Epic in Text Messages." Students take notes on the presentations and use these notes to write the summary (another rubric).

Epic - a genre of classical poetry originating in Greece. Beowulf vs. hero of choice! Be sure each Epic hero has at least three characteristics with examples!
