Students wrote a narrative essay describing their first month as new students at F. H.Collins. The essay includes their experience of the first day of classes, participating in the Science Camp and participating in Challenge Day.

Use 7 Sun symbols for: an animal, a plant, a color, a number, a symbol for the weather, a shape and a natural object,and also 7 shadow symbols, the opposite of the sun symbols, to create a mandala that expresses you.

Students will develop a response to a novel of their choice. The response will include; a narrative essay, three diary entries, three truths about human nature and an artistic/creative project

Students will write a newspaper article based on a police report of a girl found floating on a bed of kelp off of Wainui Beach. It will include Who, What, Where, When, Why and How and interviews with 3 main characters, information about traditional beliefs about whales and about whales beaching themselves. The article will include a picture of a whale and a Maori village.

Students will write an essay on a character they have chosen from the novel "The Whale Rider". Students will include their own impressions and quotations from the story to illustrate the character they have chosen and will indicate the type of character they have written about

A letter from Rawiri to Jeff. Both are characters in the novel Whalerider. Rawiri is back in Whangara and is reunited with his family. Rawiri explains to Jeff about Maori culture, the tribal connection with whales and the whale rider. He also explains who Koro Apirana is and what he is trying to teach the young men in the village as well as who Kahu is and what abilities Rawiri expects she might have. He also also talks about Nanny Flowers

Students will comment on and reflect on a quote or a short piece of writing in class. In this case students will connect the quote "Courage is grace under pressure" to the character "The Man" in the story "The Sea Devil" and to the text itself. Their response should connect to the selected writing or quote, be focused and organized in complete sentences and observe conventional rules of grammar and punctuation
