Teacher will read the story FRINDLE, by Andrew Clements, to students during Read Aloud time. Nick Allen is an enterprising fifth grader who loves to devise time-wasting qustions to avoid work in and out of class. When one of his delaying questions backfires, he's assigned an extra report that starts him on a course to introduce a new word into the English language: frindle. But Nick finds out that the process isn't so easy when his language arts teacher, Mrs. Granger, plays devil's advocate. You are one of the students in Nick's classroom. Thanks to Nick, you have a new word in your vocabulary. As an assignment for Mrs. Granger, write the complete, unabridged dictionary entry, defining the word frindle and all of its possible meanings. Students will create a character analysis through use of drawing. Draw Charles in center and then, using arrows, show how other characters relate to Charles.

Students study various word devices, such as synonyms, antonymns, idioms, and analogies. Each student then completes a short project on one of those devices, using the cloze method to fill in the meaning, identifying an example of the device, and then expressing the meaning pictorally.
