4 point rubric for writing open responses

To maintain organization of assessments, homework and reading logs

Each class will create an African-American History Poster. The poster should reflect a Theme/message/slogan related to African-American history. It should include student generated artwork and express the students' thoughts/ideas.

Students will research and write a report about a historical African-American figure. The report will include three paragraphs. The first paragraph should include a biography about the person's childhood and adulthood. The second paragraph should tell about the person's contributions to society. The last paragraph should summarize the importance of recognizing this influential person.

Students will read and research a famous person using books, magazines, and the internet. After completing their research, students will write down important facts about the person's early life and accomplishments. Students will write a biography that will include a important facts, a timeline, and a portrait of the person.

Students will make a life cycle book of an animal, plant, or insect. Students will tell the stages of the life cycle. Each life cycle stage should include a picture and facts.

Students will write a 100 story using numbers that add up to one hundred. They must show their thinking using pictures, numbers, or words. The solution must include a number sentence.

The student will write an addition or a subtraction situation/story probem. The student will show his/her thinking using words, numbers, and pictures. Students will record solution strategies clearly.

Students will select a black history project to complete. Students will choose from a cereal box biography, flap book brochure, or a biography brochure report.

Students will do a self assessment of their participation in their center rotations.

Students will create note cards for their Historical Figure Report. Students need to have at least 7-10 note cards for the report. Students will be required to include a bibliography of three resources-at least one should be a creditable online resource.

Students will learn and comprehend unfamiliar words within a text using inferencing, context clues, graphic organizers, charts, diagrams and foldables.

Students will use handouts, notes, charts, graphic organizers, diagrams and foldables to develop an understanding of words used in a variety of fifth grade text.

Writing Prompt: Students will write about a time when they found out their pets could talk. They need to tell about the things their pet would like or dislike about its life, and the things that would be important to your pet. They will write about the day they spent with their talking pet.

Students will be able to identify nonfiction text features in an informational text. Students will explain the purpose and provide an illustrated example of the text feature and the components of the feature.

Students will demonstrate their knowledge and purpose of informational text features. Each component will be worth three points. The final score will be based on the rubric below.

Students will create a booklet to develop a better understanding of landforms and bodies of water found in the United States. Students will include a page for each landform and body of water that was taught in class.
