Prompts and Responses

Activity 3 Portfolio Assignment: “Deepen Your Response” Prompts and Responses

(Leanne Healy)

Activity Directions:  In this module we keep building that chest of tools available for your use as a facilitator in your own course. Your portfolio assignment for this module will be to create a handy list of ready-to-use prompts, extenders, and replies that need only be tweaked to the individual subject matter of a particular activity, reading, or module.

Next, create several generic replies or "extenders" that could be inserted within a forum when students begin to answer with short, unsubstantiated answers like “I agree” or “Me too.”  Your replies should serve to encourage more complex thinking and substantiated responses by your students.  You should have five to six total prompts/replies combined when you are finished.

Framed Prompts:
·         How does this reading apply to…
·         What are some different ways to think about….
·         How do we know __________ is true, accurate, measurable, or even beneficial, or that the effect assumed is real or not?
·         Why do we really need to consider this issue?
·         To whom is this concern of interest or relevance?
·         Could the opposite assumption to a commonly held belief be equally valid?
·         Consider both long and short-term consequences for each position, as individuals and for the group or associated parties.
Extenders and/or Replies for Individual Students:
·         What do you feel is the most important item on your list and explain your thinking.
·         What do you mean by…
·         The idea presented here is intriguing, can anyone think of a way… (relate it back to the topic)
·         I like what I’m hearing here. Please give me more information about…
·         What part of Carol’s comment do you agree with, Leslie? How could you extend this idea to relate it to your field placement?
·         Interesting. Have you considered…
·         I’d love to read that article in its entirety as might some of your classmates. Please let us know where you found the information. Thanks.

Extenders and/or Replies for Large Group

·         What a busy time on the boards this week! The postings are numerous and all over the map. (Include quotes from the discussion) Let’s take a look at some of the important definitions or terms.

·         Here we have three very different opinions on this topic. (State the opinions expressed.) If you put yourself in another person’s shoes, what additional thoughts come to mind?
·         When students begin to get into the conversation about “fixing” a given problem – by citing or paraphrasing participants’ entries, you can question how plans or strategies will be considered effective, or which conditions need to be addressed in sequence.
