Tip Sheet - Bb Icons

Blackboard Icons and the Bread Crumb Trail

Once you have entered your Blackboard course, you will see a lot of different icons. Icons, or small images, represent or give you a clue as to the nature of what lies within them. Let’s take a look at the main icons.

The following icons can be found in each learning plan.

Assignment

If you see an icon like this one, it indicates that there is an assignment.  At the bottom of each assignment, you will see a link like the one below.  Clicking on this link will let you view, complete, and submit the assignment.

Assessment
Blackboard will show this icon when there is a test or quiz.

Discussion
When found in the learning plan, this icon is a link to the discussion question for the lesson.

Folder
This icon is a folder. If you imagine a manila folder on your desk or in a file cabinet, it contains many things which are usually related in some manner. When you see this icon, you will find multiple items inside the folder. There may be some instances where you find a folder inside of another folder.

Item
This icon can either let you know that it is a link to a single page of information, or that the information is presented right there, next to the icon.

The following icons are found under the communication button.

Announcement
Announcements appear on the homepage of Bb. It is important every time you log into your class to see if there are new announcements posted. If you are in the communications area of the course, you will see this icon that will also take you the announcement page.

Collaboration
Click on the collaboration icon to join in a chat session.

Discussion
When found in the communication area, this icon is a link to the discussion board. This will allow you to see all the discussions posted in the course.

Group Pages
You can be assigned to small groups in Bb. The group pages, found under the communication button will allow you to access a group discussion board, email, and a place to exchange files.

Roster
This icon found in the communication area of the course allows you to see the students enrolled in the class. If you want to see all the students in the class you will need to click on .

Web Link
By clicking on this item, you will be taken to a website. Some times the link will open up within the Bb window. However, your instructor may set it up so the site will open up in a new browser window.

The Bread Crumb Trail

No matter where you go in Blackboard, you will have a visual link that shows you how you got to where you are. This is located at the top of each and every screen within Blackboard. If you choose to navigate by the breadcrumb trail, you can go back as many levels as you choose, simply by clicking on the active link.
