Activity 4

Fractured Fairytales...

This activity needs to be completed within a 2 week bracket.

Reports and Venn Diagrams to be kept within the Task Folder if printed.

You will learn more about the art of Fairytale writing by comparing original tales to tales with a twist known as 'Fractured Fairytales!'

In recent years many movies have combined original fairytales and their characters into a tale with humor and modern flare...

  • Shrek 1 and 2
  • Happily Never After
  • Ella Enchanted
  • Hoodwinked
  • etc

Your task is to compare the similarities to the new and the original tales.

Step 1.

Read through the tale "Red Riding Hood" - an original tale can be found on many websites listed in the resource page.

Step 2.

Read the "The Wolf's Story" by Toby Forward

(should be in the resources box.)

Step 3.

Read Roald Dahl's Poem entitled-'Red Riding Hood and the Wolf'.

Create a VENN Diagram to compare the three publications of the tale.

Step 4.

Once you have read both tales go to the library and watch "Hoodwinked".

In this movie you will discover additional ways to look at stories through different eyes; What did each character see? How did they feel? Was it as bad as first thought or was it all a miss understanding?
This will show you a different technique to the one you may have used in Activity 2.

Step 5.

What did you learn from this activity?

How has the author structured and presented ideas in both texts and the movie?

Have you discovered what makes a story interesting?

What makes a story boring?

What do you need to keep the audiences attention?

Were there any twists in the story line that made it more exciting?

Which do you prefer the original, the wolf's side, the poem  or the movie that shared all points of view?

Step 5 needs to be presented as a review.

Options for format may include;

  • Story board presentation
  • Newspaper report/ article/ review
  • 'How to write a fairytale' manual
  • Your own ideas are acceptable!
