Knowledge Base

Through readings and research and the development of case studies covering topics in Endocrinology, Oncology, etc., I was able to expand my knowledge base in the four(4) core content areas that are identified by the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice, 2nd ed.  Following is an excerpt containing the diagnosis portion of a case study on oncology:

"The patient is diagnosed with atypical community-acquired pneumonia.  In addition, the patient was recently diagnosed with uterine carcinoma and is yet to complete her course of radiation therapy.  According to the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice, Cardiovascular/Pulmonary Pattern F: Impaired Ventilation and Respiration/Gas Exchange Associated With Respiratory Failure best describes her condition.  The ICD-9-CM code for pneumonia is 486.  As a result of her cancer and radiation therapy, the patient suffers from weakness and general fatigue and malaise, which is described in Musculoskeletal Pattern C: Impaired Muscle Performance.  The ICD-9-CM code for malaise and fatigue is 780.7.  Secondary patterns can also be applied.  The patientÂ’s kyphotic posture can be addressed by Musculoskeletal Pattern B: Impaired Posture.  The ICD-9-CM code for kyphosis (acquired) is 737.1.  Lastly, Musculoskeletal Pattern D: Impaired Joint Mobility, Motor Function, Muscle Performance, and Range of Motion Associated with Connective Tissue Dysfunction can be applied to her problems with the right shoulder.  The ICD-9-CM code for shoulder dislocation is 831."  (Ranido M.  A case study on oncology: uterine cancer.  Clinical Medicine (PPDPT 1608), 2005)
