Great American Smokeout Walk
Implications
and how we accomplished our goals
1. To organize and publicize a community-wide event
- In order to accomplish this goal Tracy and I had to contact
many local radio and television stations, such as WTOC and Kiss
97.3. They assisted us in the promotion and advertisement of
the Great American Smokeout walk.
- We also created flyers and distributed them throughout
AASU and both of the local hospitals. While passing out flyers
we also had the oppurtunity to discuss the walk with the
employees
- To make sure the walk was organized we created a
presentation with many facts about smoking and quitting
2. Raise awareness and/or money to support a cause
- To raise awareness Tracy and I obtained important
information about smoking and how it can affect a person's
coronary arteries.Doing this we had images from patients
that suffer from Coronary Artery Disease
- At the booth we had a donation box available for the public
to donate to the (ACS) American Cancer Society and was
able to raise money and give that back to the ACS
- We also had available a notebook with real stories and
images of patients with coronary and peripheral artery disease
- Brochures were also given out to the public to take home
and read. These brochures discussed risks of smoking, quitting,
and damage of second hand smoke
3. Get the Great American Smokeout Walk to continue
and become an annual event
- While promoting this event Tracy and I were able speak
with representatives from ACS and they were really interested
in the event and would assist in keeping this event a early practice.
4. Petition and possibly pass legislature that will affect
the state of Georgia
- At the walk we made available a petition to sign to raise
the cigarette tax in GA $1. We obtained the walkers name,
address, and email address to submit online
-We had some participants sign but not enough to pass
legislature
