How to Quit...

How to Quit....

Step 1: Make the decision to quit - this is your decision and should be made yourself.  Quitting for others may seem like a good idea, but in the end you have to be committed on your own.

Step 2:  Choose a way to quit and set a date - There are many options to help you quit smoking, pick one that works best for you and your lifestyle.  Slowly lowering the number of cigarettes you smoke a day, or quitting smoking in the car or in the house are helpful when trying to quit.  Mark the date on your calender and get rid of all cigarettes and ashtrays in your home, car, and work.

Step 3:  Dealing with withdrawal - This is usually the hardest part; find the triggers that make you want a cigarette (being in the car or on the phone) and be prepared for them.  Have gum or hard candy around and invovle yourself in activities in which you are unable to smoke.  Remember to reward yourself, this is hard!

Step 4 :  Stick with the plan and be smoke-free - Many smokers will "fall off the wagon" before they successfully quit.  Just keep trying and it will become a way of life.

Other methods of quitting:

Medications - Your doctor can prescribe medication to help with the need and withdrawal symptoms associated with smoking.

Hypnosis - This has worked for people in the past, but remember, you have to want to quit.

Nicotine patch or gum - These slowly release nicotine into your bloodstream to help with cravings.

Acupuncture - Sounds extreme but anything that will help you quit is worth it!

Cold Turkey - Where there is a will there is a way, making the decision to quit and sticking to it shows real strength of character.  We knew you could do it!
