Sarah's Journey

RCampus

COL 105

This course is to get freshmen at Tri-County Technical College comfortable with the college atmosphere and fast paced schedule of classes. This course introduces us to the layout of the campus and faculty to approach for certain questions. Freshman Seminar also makes the differences of college and highschool very obvious. The instrusctor teaches us that we can't treat college classes like we did highschool. Cramming for tests and writing papers is unacceptable when trying to make a decent grade and study time is required for classes each day. It is also explained that college is more demanding and that you must be focused with clear goals in order to do well. College 105 teaches us study tips and shows us our best learning style, and also helps us realize our strengths and weaknesses and work ethic in comparison with a career that we're interested in.

One event that I attended that was required for this class was the Diversity Workshop. It was an hour long workshop that really pointed out the differences and similarities of people in the class. An activity that we did that helped emphasis this was that when the instructors listed different religions, places of birth, ethnicity, number of brother and sisters, and class placement each person had to stand for the category that they listed. Then we had to get in pairs and tell the other person that problems that we have with a certain topic of our choice and then we had to say the pros of that topic. This helped us to reflect on our own beliefs and were able to share them with someone else. I thought this workshop was great because it helped each person notice the diversity that the college has and to not judge others before getting to know them. It explained that we all have a story that we are scared to share at times and that regardless of our difference of backgrounds and beliefs that we should all accept each other and respect each others values.

Another event that I attended was What is Plagiarism Workshop. This workshop was a great teaching about how easy plagiarism is even if you are not meaning to do it, but gave examples of how it can be avoided. Plagairism can be avoided by following the MLA format for work citation. This includes using quotations where needed and including the author and page number at the end of sentences. They said that many professors fail students for plagiarism on papers written for the class each semester. Plagairism is very easy to do but also just as easy to get caught. Colleges now have programs where you can submit your papers online and the program will detect any plagarism that is found from internet sources. Plagairism is unfair to the author, editor, or publisher for the source used because you must give them credit for their information and work that you used. This workshop was very helpful and with their tips I will be sure to not be blamed for plagiarism in the future.
