Prostate Cancer Awareness.

Overview

 Overview:

Prostate cancer awareness is highly significant regarding that of the male population. Prostate cancer can affect any male, especially African American males. They are more likely to develop and die from prostate caner. As future leaders in the health profession, a group effort was designed to educate the male population on the significance of prostate cancer screenings, where African American males were the target audience. In an attempt to capture the attention of the African American community, we collaborated with Savannah State University, a historically black college/university. Savannah State University is home to WHCJ Radio 90.3 FM. We used the airways as a medium to address the African American audience, promoting prostate cancer awareness. We also spent time on the campus of Savannah State University promoting prostate cancer awareness. During this time, we present the community with vital information, such as statistics that reveal the increased risks and mortality rates concerning African American males. We also provided information on free screening that will be available during the month of September (National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month), through the American Cancer Society. As leaders within the community, we recognize the urgent need to present the African American community with such information.
During this time we discovered that anything can be accomplished through a collaborative effort. As a group, we walked away with the assurance that we provided sufficient means in meeting a detrimental need. This experience has allowed us all to explore our leadership skills, which served as great preparation for future leaders within the health care profession.
