Community Involvement

The Gift

I am proud to be a contributing member of society. For part of my years as a juvenile, I did not give back and felt empty. When I became involved at school, I realized I could make a difference in my life and in the lives of other people. Having the opportunity to be active in my community is a gift that I no longer take for granted. Towards the end of high school, I took on leadership roles and tried to get others involved as well. Throughout my college career, I continue to do that. I strive to be a positive role model for my peers, am an active member in the TOT club, and volunteer at Whittier Elementary.

Positive Peer Model

At first all positive peer model meant to me was "not doing the wrong things". As I learn and grow, I become more a believer that it means "doing the right things". In high school I was a leader, I was student editor and co-creator of the school's newsletter and yearbooks. I ran two food drives and did presentations on "positive attitudes/ making a difference" and "homelessness in our community". After high school, I began having game nights with friends. Hosting these weekly events keeps my friends and family out of trouble and gives them a fun way to express themselves that can enrich their lives. I helped three friends get into college. "Enthusiasm is a divine possession", that is something I live by. In 2007 i got my friends involved in walk for a cause. In 2007 I did the March of Dimes (premature babies), Light the Night (leukemia), and Aids Walk.

EvCC's Teachers of Tomorrow

I first heard about TOT in the fall of 2007. I tried to keep up with the group via email during my pregnancy. I started making meetings a priority after the first of the year.  The mission of the Teachers of Tomorrow is: "for education majors to work, discuss, and gather information towards their degree". Since I have been an active member, we have been involved in campus awareness day, scholarship workshops, and global awareness day. Future goals include quarterly scholarship workshops, community outreach and after school homework club.

Mrs. Fronckowiak's Class

In March 2008 I needed to do observations for class. In the past, I had done it at schools I previously attended but I decided to move out of my comfort zone. I volunteered from March until June. It was amzing to watch the kids grow and I got a lot of good tips from Mrs. Fronkowiak.

The Promise

Community Involvement should be a lifetime experience, not something that you try once or twice and call it good. Community involvement will always be a part of my life. It feels good to give back and be a contributing member of society. I have goals and ideas of opportunities that I hope to accomplish within the next 15 or so years. My future plans and areas of interest include but are not limited to: coaching for Boys and Girls club of Snohomish County, Big Brother/ Big Sisters program, PTA, Chaperone for YMCA Teen Night. Being active in my community is something I enjoy and promise to do throughout my life.
