Guessing Meaning from Context

The objective of module one is to learn how to guess meaning from the context of the documents you read.  Though you will be using a dictionary to check your work, your goal is to become more reliant on your own cognitive abilities and less on the dictionary in order to decrease the amount of time it takes to read documents containing unfamiliar vocabulary.

Your homework assignment has two parts:

1.  Read the article from Breaking News English in this attachment and answer the questions that follow the article: 

users/MsHunter/upload/File/TESL_565_module_1.doc

 2.  Choose any additional article you would like from the Breaking News English website www.breakingnewsenglish.com/ and choose five or more words to guess from the context.  Use the same format from the link in part one to identify the word, guess the meaning, look up the dictionary meaning, and write a new sentence.  Be sure to include the title of the article you chose when you email me your answers here:  neareastmusic@hotmail.com
