COL 105

College 105 is a course that is linked with two other courses:  in my case Sociology 101 and English 101.The official name of the course is “Freshman Seminar,” though I feel a much more appropriate name would be “Freshman Success.”  It is a class geared towards freshman (obviously), and it brings forth many ways to be successful in college, from using appropriate study skills to being in the best frame of mind for success.

For the class, we are required to three out of class events in order to pass the class.  These events are to get the students involved in the campus and make the student feel less distant from their learning location.

One of the events that I attended was a Plagiarism Seminar.  The purpose of this seminar was to inform of what is and what isn’t plagiarism, and the effects of committing plagiarism.  A very informative seminar, though I already knew most of the information covered.  I do feel that it is important to have a grasp on what plagiarism is, if only because you don’t want to break the law.  I feel that it goes deeper than just the law though.  If you plagiarize, you’re taking someone’s thoughts, feelings, and words and saying that you came up with them.  It’s a moral thing.  It’s just not right.  While it was good to see plagiarism addressed and publicly hated, it was an extremely boring event.

Another event that I went to was a poetry reading.  I went to it expecting to hear a bunch of poems from poets and do the stereotypical snapping after each one, but when the teacher came in, he asked who brought poems to read.  This caught everyone in the class off guard, as no one expected to be asked to read.  Luckily, the teacher had brought a few poems of his own that we read (I had volunteered to read one out loud).  The reading was somewhat improvised as no one knew what to expect, but it worked out for the best.  It actually made me remember about a story I had started once.  Maybe one day I’ll go back and finish it.
