Experiences – Problem Solving

RBC Internal Case Competition

Delivered 25 January 2008

This internal case competition is held by the university and sponsored by the RBC Bank. It is held annually by the BCom Program (Bachelor of Commerce) at University of Victoria, and the purpose of the activity is to train its business students to combine what they learn from the program and to solve a particular case. The case may involve the knowledge of marketing, accounting and other business areas, and the student groups, as groups of business advisors, need to apply what they learn from the program to find the best solution for the case, and the case has to be solved within three hours and presented in front of judges.

For our case, we divided the group into two small groups of two students and three students. The group with three students were in charge with the accounting area. Their jobs were to figure whether the budget, the owner in the case had, was enough to cover the items of company’s operations. On the other hand, I was in the group that was in charge with marketing part. We have to find the 4P’s (products, price, placement, promotion) of the case, identify the key issue, and find the best solution for the issue.

As a result, we did not win the competition. Even though we did not win, I learned many valuable experiences from the competition. Because of this activity, I was able to see how those business advisors work in real life. With limited budget and resources, we had to make realistic plans and strategies for the owner of the case, and it was hard and challenging. Also, teamwork was a very important element is this competition, without it, we were not able to make the result and the presentation happen. I also learned that it was not about winning the competition, more importantly, gained priceless experiences from it was much more valuable than winning.
