Social Studies Current Events Rubric -- McKee
Purpose: In order to more successfully contribute to community and society at large, you should be current on Canadian issues, controversies and events. Being an informed citizen and discussing current events will give you a better perspective on different points of view. You will examine what is happening right now in the world and try to make connections to the Canadian life. Each student will complete the current events assignment individually or in a pair.

Level 1
The article submitted contains two or more of the following problems: not current, not from a reliable source, is not about a topic, issue or event in Canada, or is too short in order to fulfill the requirements stated. Two or more errors in either information on source or citation format.
Summary
Level 4
Written summary exceeds the following areas: 100 to 250 words in length; answers all of the basic journalism questions (who?, what?, when?, where?, why?); gives a brief but meaningful summary of what the article is about; the main ideas are summarized and the significance of these ideas is explained.
Level 3
Written summary meets following criteria: 100 to 250 words in length; answers all of the basic journalism questions (who?, what?, when?, where?, why?); gives a brief but meaningful summary of what the article is about; the main ideas are summarized and the significance of these ideas is explained.
Level 2
Written summary is weak in one of the following areas: 100 to 250 words in length; the basic journalism questions (who?, what?, when?, where?, why?); a brief but meaningful summary of what the article is about; the main ideas are summarized and the significance of these ideas is explained.
