Fair The student is able to read a short story and figure out word meanings of unfamiliar words when given assistance.	Good The student reads a short story with unfamiliar words and demonstrates understanding of strategies for finding word meanings.
Recognition of unfamiliar words	Poor The student does not recognize unfamiliar words and skips over them.	Fair The student acknowledges that he/she does not know the meaning of unfamiliar words and uses a strategy to find the meaning of the word with assistance.	Good The student acknowledges that he/she does not know the meaning of unfmiliar words and quickly apply strategies for successfully finding the meanings without assistance.
Evidence of learned strategies used	Poor The student shows no evidence of using strategies to find unfamiliar word meanings.	Fair The student demonstrates adequate usage of at least one strategy to find meaning of unfamiliar words in a story.	Good The student demonstrates an understanding of the strategies and applies more than one strategy to find the meanings of unfamiliar words in a story without assistance.
