African Masks 
This lesson's goal is to make a 3-dimensional mask using paper sculpture and/or cardboard relief design techniques. Students creatively express an authentic looking African tribal mask demonstrating their understanding of the elements and principles of art.

The mask was a 3-dimensional sculpture using plastic masks and plaster cloth sculpture techniques to express an authentic looking African Tribal Mask.

Most of the mask is sturdy, but when displaying it, there are a couple of pieces that might need extra care.

Creativity

Excellent

Totally original design and elements. Mask successfully uses symmetry, balance, pattern and unity. Color, composition, and decorative details enhance the mask.

Most of the mask elements are unique, however, a few may have been copied. The mask has some resemblance to an authentic African Tribal Mask.

The mask has few or no unique elements. The mask does not resemble those found in the African culture.

The mask looks thrown together at the last minute. It appears that little design or planning was done.

Students are always willing to complete assigned tasks and help set up and clean up projects. Students collaborated and always used studio time and clean up time well.

Students are sometimes willing to complete assigned tasks and help set up and clean up projects. Students collaborated and were in seats when class starts and uses studio time appropriately.

Students did not show a willingness to complete assigned tasks and collaborate to help set up and clean up projects. Students were often not in their seat when class starts and/ or rushes to finish.
