Students are to complete monthly current events using the following rubric. The monthly event must have occurred during that specific month. Example: The October current event MUST be an event that took place in October. The due date will always be the last week of the month.

Summary

ADVANCED

The summary is written in paragraph form and
contains the 5W's. The main idea of the article is clear and the information is written in the student's own words (quoted if necessary).
PROFICIENT

The summary paragraphs are written in a few sentences.
A summary of the main idea and important details are included, but lacking clarity.
BASIC

The summary paragraph is written in a few sentences and lacks clarity.
The summary simply restates the main ideas, not in the student's own words.
BELOW BASIC

No summary is included or the summary is mainly plagiarized or copied from the article or text.
Response/Reaction

ADVANCED

The student's reaction to the article is one paragraph (5 or more sentences), and explains reactions and opinions to the information in the article. Facts are included from the article to support the student's opinion/reaction.
PROFICIENT

The student's reaction to the article is one paragraph (3-5 sentences), and somewhat explains reactions and opinions to the information in the article. It includes some evidence to support the student's opinion/reaction.
BASIC

The student's reaction to the article is a few sentences and slightly explains reactions and opinions to the information. The student does not include evidence to support opinion/reaction.
BELOW BASIC

No response/reaction is included in the write up.
Oral Presentation

ADVANCED

Student is well prepared and is comfortable presenting information. Student makes consistent eye contact, speaks in a clear voice and uses a steady pace. Student is easily able to answer questions regarding the article.
PROFICIENT

Student is prepared and is somewhat comfortable presenting information. Student makes eye contact. Pace and volume may vary at times. Student is able to answer questions about the article.
BASIC

Student is unprepared and must use notes many times for presenting. Student makes limited eye contact. Pace and volume make it difficult for the audience to understand the information. Student is able to answer some questions regarding the article.
BELOW BASIC

Student has not prepared a presentation or simply reads from note cards. Student makes limited or no eye contact AND/OR pace and volume make it impossible for the audience to understand the information. Student is unable to answer questions regarding the article.
Punctuality

Article was submitted on time.
PROFICIENT

Article was submitted 1 day late.
BASIC

Article was submitted 2-4 days late.
