Judging Criteria:
• Scientific Thought: 30 points
– The topic is sufficiently narrow and is answerable
– The hypothesis directly addresses the question and is based on research
– Procedures are appropriate to answer the question
– Variables and controls are identified and their effects on the results are clear
– Data is adequate for the conclusion and appropriate for the problem
– Conclusion is logical and based on collected data
• Skill: 30 points
– Written work demonstrates use of scientific/mathematical vocabulary, has clear ideas and organization and is carefully edited
– Project demonstrates competent mathematical or computational skills
– There is evidence that the student knew and used safety standards
– There is evidence that all equipment used is within the student's level of understanding or expertise
– Data collection and display demonstrate completeness, accuracy, and precision
– Project demonstrates the student's scientific workmanship in constructing needed instruments and ability to observe carefully, and document
• Thoroughness: 15 points
– The project is complete; all parts are present and well developed
– Research presented displays depth of knowledge relevant to project
– Conclusion explains what was learned and may include what else can be explored or could have been learned
• Creative Ability: 15 points
– Project includes new and interesting information or perspective
– Student curiosity is evident
– Project demonstrates ingenuity in the design and development of the project
• Presentation: 10 points
– All parts of the display contribute to its visual appeal. They are neat, legible, and have an attractive layout
– Project components are presented in an organized manner and clearly labeled
