Knowledge of Human Development and Learning
The teacher understands how children learn and develop and can provide learning opportunities that support their intellectual, social, and personal development.
Artifact: Multiple Intelligence Chart
Date: Fall 2007
Rationale: Not all students are engaged by the same instructional strategy. Accordingly, by incorporating activities that encompass all eight “intelligences” as defined by Howard Gardner not only engages more students in the learning process, but it helps the teacher reinforce the material in a variety of ways and facilitate a deeper understanding of the material. I am including a multiple intelligence chart that I prepared as part of my student teaching unit that demonstrates how I included activities in my unit that embraced all of the “intelligences” and I understand how children learn and develop as critical in providing learning opportunities that meet their needs.
Artifact: Human Development and Learning Coursework – Group Diversity Project Reflections on How the Variables of SES, Race, Bilingualism, Religion, and Gender Affect Classroom Experiences and Academic Achievement
Date: Winter 2007
Rationale: As part of my coursework at Eastern, I took a class in human development and learning and participated in a diversity project with other members of my class. As part of this project, we analyzed the variables of socioeconomic status, race, bilingualism, religion, and gender and how they affect classroom experiences and academic achievement. I have included in my portfolio my reflections on these variables and how they impact learning as evidence of my understanding of the impact of these variables in the classroom.
