The OCC Sierra Club

This Club is founded on the ideals and principles established by the Sierra Club, a group of environmentalists established in 1892. The main purpose of this club is: to raise environmental awareness, contribute to our community, and meet other like-minded people interested in enjoying and protecting the environment. Our club is more closely linked, however, with the student run arm of the Sierra Club, known as the SSC.

The Sierra Student Coalition

The Sierra Student Coalition is a broad group around the country working to protect the environment on the local, regional, national and international level. We have over 250 affiliated groups. The SSC is the student arm of the Sierra Club, the largest and oldest grassroots environmental organization in the country (founded in 1892!). Like the Sierra Club, the SSC is run by volunteers, in our case high school and college students. We have a small staff in our World Headquarter in Washington, DC (they used to be students). The SSC is the largest student led environmental group in the country.

We've got moderate Democrats, radical anarchists and everything in between. The one thing we agree on is that we can all be most effective at protecting the environment through edgy, original, strategic and legal campaigns. Our approach is doggedly environmental, but we deal with issues of economic justice and environmental racism as well as war and civil liberties. We believe in the need for a unified progressive movement in this country, if we're ever going to save more of the wilderness. We're a part of the Sierra Club and we share the Club's mission and philosophy (Take a look at Sierra Club 101 to get a feel for our older colleagues).
