Response Quality	Distinguished Responses are fully developed and strongly on-topic.	Proficient Responses are well developed and remain on-topic for the most part.	Apprentice Responses are somewhat developed and remain on-topic some of the time.	Novice Responses are underdeveloped and do not remain on-topic.
Interpretation	Distinguished Exceptional understanding of the whole text; Interpretation is perceptive and well-supported with examples from the text.	Proficient Basic understanding of the whole text; interpretation is thoughtful and supported with some examples from the text.	Apprentice Some understanding of portions of the text/text as a whole; interpretation lacks insight and/or support from the text.	Novice Literal or Limited understanding of the text.
